Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Who: The who that fall in to my category are smokers. But after interviewing five more smokers I have found that for various reasons they do not find a need for my product. These people are smokers that do not care about smelling like smoke and enjoy smoking outside whether it is very hot or very cold. Three of my five interviewees said that they find comfort in the fresh air while they smoke whether the air be very hot or cold. Smoking to them was a form of relaxation and it was maximized by being in nature in some sort.

What: One of my interviewees also brought up the point that if you are going to smoke most people have accepted the parameters it takes to do so, such as smelling like smoke and having bad breath. He said no matter what an addict will smoke so if they cannot afford or do not find the product of high importance to them they will not consider it.

Why: The outsiders need is just to smoke whether they have something to wisp away the smoke from them or not. This differs from the insiders because these people still have the urge to smoke but care a lot about their appearance. These people do not want to smell bad or be seen as smokers whereas outsiders will smoke and not care how people see them.

Smokers that do not want to be seen as smokers or smell like smoke, most likely professionals.
People who do not mind being seen as smokers or smelling like smoke, most likely younger kids or retired old people.
What
Want something that will take away smoke from them so that they can enjoy smoking inside or just enjoy smoking without the stench staying with them.
Do not care for a product that wisps away smoke because they do not care if they smell like smoke or not and enjoy smoking outside being in nature.
Why
Want to not smell bad and seem professional even if they smoke because there is a somewhat bad connotation around smoking.
Want to embrace life and live it the way they want whether that means smelling like smoke or not. These people want to enjoy themselves.


This table and the outside the boundaries Smokers made me realize that my product will not be for all smokers like I originally had hoped. But it also made me realize what my target group will be for my product.

  1. I agree with your last statement, because when I did this assignment it allowed me to see what markets I shouldn't be targeting. Moreover, I found this assignment difficult, but I think you did a great job on creating the chart and breaking down the individuals who are outside of your market and those that would be interested in what you have to offer.

  2. As I am not a smoker and would fall into the “Outside the boundary” Category. I do think that this would be a great opportunity. I like the way you organized your research and your result. As this product may not benefit most, I do think it will benefit many though. There are people who date or enjoy the company of others that smoke and can benefit from this product. So while there are some that are outside the boundaries even they can benefit from it in the long haul.

  3. You bring up a good point that many smokers simply don't care that they smell like smoke. To them it's a small price to pay for something that brings them pleasure and enjoyment. I think for your Outsiders group the people that would benefit more would be those who have to be around someone who smokes but doesn't care that they smell. I'm not a smoker personally, but if I did I agree with your interviewee's that being outside in the fresh air would probably be something I would enjoy and not want taken away.

  4. After reading this assignment, I went back to your first part of the hypothesis to get a better understanding of what your opportunity was, and I really liked it. In this assignment, you successfully outlined the difference between people who would use your product and people who would not, even though they both fall into the category of smokers. You narrowed down your target customer to professionals who do not want to be seen as smokers, which I believe will help you with targeted advertisements in the future.

  5. Great job highlighting the people who are outside of your boundary, and what there reasons for it where. I do agree that a lot of smokers don't mind the affects of smoking and that would be a significant part of your target market, but I still feel there is enough people who hate the side effects of smoking who would love your product.
