Identifying Local Opportunities

1.    Four cling to life after Saturday morning head-on crash in Madeira Beach

In this article four people were injured in a head-on car crash. A young man driving a corvette going east on the Tom Stuart Causeway lost control and passed into the opposite lane of traffic. The car then crashed head on into another vehicle causing extensive injuries and damage. It seems as of now that alcohol, weather, and reckless driving were the causes. The problem is that drunk people still have the choice to start their car and drive while they are intoxicated.

The main problem here seems to be the alcohol involved many people make bad decisions while intoxicated. The first being to enter their car, but then to also drive recklessly. This causes a problem for all people on the road driving because they are in danger. It also presents problems for insurance companies and the medical institutions treating the extensive injuries.

2.    Florida on alert as Category 4 Hurricane Irma chugs west

This article speaks all about hurricane Irma and what the repercussions could be if it strikes Florida. It also speaks about the affect it could have on the islands to the south. Overall it just speaks about how catastrophic this storm could be and that people need to prepare.

The main problem here seems to be that there are very large and dangerous storms forming during this time of the year in the tropics. Many coastal areas are either below or barely above sea level which creates an opportunity for disastrous outcomes. These coastal areas are not well defended or prepped for the storm surge or flooding that comes with these storms. There are many opportunities to create products to prevent these outcomes. The people who will be affected are residents, insurance companies, government officials, and first responders.

3.    A $13.2 million sale brings 345 more luxury apartments to Tampa's Westshore Marina District

This article discusses a new development in the Tampa Bay area where there will be 345 luxury apartments. In the article, they talk about the destruction from Irma creating problems for this development. This development was planned to happen before the recession but did not happen because of the economic problems.

The main problem here is that these apartments are going to bring insane traffic to an already high traffic area. This is already a place with one main road leading back into the heart of Tampa. This road has bumper to bumper traffic for miles before these new apartments are even added. There are no plans to expand the roads leading out of this area. This affects the new tenants that will be living in these apartments. It also affects the people who already live in this area. It will also affect the Department of Transportation because at some point they will have to fix this problem.

4.    Daniel Ruth: It's nice lawmakers restored recess, but just 20 lousy minutes?

This article talks about the fact that for a good bit of time now there has not been a requirement for kids to have recess in school. Florida lawmakers have just passed a new law where it is required that kids in kindergarten through fifth grade must have a recess period. The only problem is that recess is only being given as a twenty-minute period. This is such a short time period of the day that a child could barely even get their heart rate up before it is time to go back into the classroom. This affects the students, teachers, lawmakers, and parents of these children.

5.    Hillsborough deputies bust family marijuana ring worth $1 million

This article briefly speaks about a Mother, Father, and adult son bought 4 houses and used them as a marijuana growing operation in the Tampa area. There was an estimated million and change price put on the 539 pounds of marijuana plants found in the houses. The problem here is that the illegality of marijuana motivates people to grow this plant for profit. So much government money and tax payer money is being dumped into fighting this “drug” battle. This affects the legislators and government as well as the local community.

  1. Hi Matt,

You successfully identified local issues, however, you did not present opportunities to these problems. In order to view the entrepreneurial side of the story, it would have helped to see your point of view on what you thought could have resolved these issues. Regarding the second article you chose, hurricane Irma would have presented an opportunity to those selling first aid kits.

  2. I like that you had a large variety of articles that spanned from hurricane Irma damage to law and policy. I agree that the recess period is too short for those kids! I agree with Kimberly that you didn't present opportunities with these articles. I don't see how some (such as the hurricane irma one or the drunk driving one) would have an opportunity associated with them. You did present good articles though that were interesting to read!

  3. I found the article about the new Tampa apartments to be very interesting, as I am a Tampa Bay resident. I liked this assignment for this reason: It gave me an opportunity to look into the news from my hometown when/where I normally wouldn't have. I find the development of the Tampa Bay area to be fascinating, especially in recent years.

  4. Great job on highlighting all different kinds of problems in and around the Tampa area. Your formatting was great it made it easier on the reader to follow. I found the article on the 345 luxury apartment to be interesting, since I never been to Tampa, I amazed at how much impact that problem has on the city. Good Work.
