Reading Reflection 3

What surprised me the most was that Ray Kroc was not the person who first opened McDonalds. This may sound dumb but I did not know much about McDonalds before this because I have always hated this food but when I bought the book I figured it would be about starting the business and opening the first door and other things of that sort. It is somewhat ironic that what I admire most about Ray Kroc is also what I admire least. His decisions that involved business and also the deals he made were astounding which is very admirable. The problem is these decisions and this thriving for business success destroyed his relationships outside of business. I noticed that Kroc was very honest especially in his early entrepreneur days when he was selling cups. He knew who to target as is main customers and also knew that these people would continue to do business with him. He never attempted to take advantage of them and this was important to him. One thing I don’t understand is why Clem Bohr decided to screw Kroc over so badly by letting him build on properties he didn’t actually own. I understand he made some money but wouldn’t there be repercussions? Wont he end up losing money after lawsuits? My first question I would ask Ray Kroc is if his commitment to business was worth ruining some of his other relationships and the second is what he learned from making the decision to focus on business and neglect these relationships. It is pretty obvious that Kroc was obsessed with hard work. He gave up many things in his life for his business and working hard. I share that opinion somewhat because I love hard work and think it is important but it is not worth ruining personal relationships.

  1. I also read this book and agree that Kroc had an issue with how committed he was to his business. I like how you bring up how honest he was in his business ventures early on because that's something a lot of business people lack. As much as I don't like the food at McDonalds this book gave me a new perspective on it.

  2. Ray Kroc sounds like an interesting person to have read about. He sounds very familiar to other massively successful entrepreneurs, most of them are usually very hard working and tend to have destroyed several relation ships because of their commitment to growing their business. Overall great job on your post especially on what you admired and least admired about ray Kroc.
