Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

1.     Chinese imports may soon have a tariff leaving the door open for a company that can lower prices to take over that market.
2.
a)    Throughout Donald Trump’s campaign he stated that he would place tariffs on Chinese imports to so that fair trade would be restored. Now that he is The President these changes could follow.
b)    When this does occur, Chinese imports may become less prevalent and people will have to find an alternative that is also cheap. This leaves the door open for a company who can get prices down to take that portion of the market.
c)     I think the customer for this is any American Citizen that purchases Chinese goods because of the cheap price.
d)    I think this is relatively difficult to exploit because there are a lot of other companies that are in this area that could adjust and take over this part of the market. You would have to enter fast and get there before the other competitors.
3.     I think the reason that many people do not identify this opportunity is because they hear Donald Trump speak of these things and only think about if it is good or bad for the country. They do not think about what opportunities may arise from something like this happening.

Opportunity 2

More people are starting to eat healthy, locally grown foods. This leaves an opportunity for a new type of grocery store where all product is local. This may leave selection lower than other grocers but allows the new generation of healthy eaters a place to shop.

a)    If you look at the creation of many new grocery chains such as The fresh Market and Whole Foods, you can see that many of the younger generation are moving towards healthier less processed foods.
b)    This leaves an opportunity because a lot of these customers are looking for locally grown food that is not processed or minimally processed.
c)     The prototypical customer is health conscious mostly between the ages of 17-35, but many customers will also be outside of this age range.
d)    I think this is another difficult industry to enter because there are already many companies that own most of the market such as Publix. But it could take a niche part of the market that is still very profitable.

Many people do not realize how well this idea could work because they don’t realize that many people buy the food they do just because they feel that is the only option. Many people want to support local farmers and have food they know is not processed, but just do not have an easily accessible place to get it.

Opportunity 3

The EPA actively regulates pesticide usage so that no pesticide can be used that is harmful or deadly to humans or certain animals.

a)    I was reading through the regulations.gov site and saw that there were amendments to pesticide usage. This led me to further research pesticide regulation on the EPA site.
b)    This information leads me to believe and opportunity exists because someone could formulate a natural pesticide that is non-toxic and will not harm any animal or human. This pesticide could instead deter the animals that destroy the crops that are planted and if other animals or humans consume it they will not be harmed.
c)     I think the customer to this product is farmers especially organic farmers that could use this natural pesticide to protect their crops and still be able to label them organic.
d)    This is relatively hard to exploit because there are several barriers into the market. First you need a chemist to create the formula for this natural pesticide then you must be approved by the EPA. Lastly you must convince the farmers that the switch from what they are using currently will benefit them.

I think this idea is something that some people have already thought about because there are bug repellents that are naturally formulated. I just do not believe that anyone has thought about using it on this scale for a natural pesticide formula.

Opportunity 4

The Clean Power Plan Is being interpreted by the EPA to allow them to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from existing power plants.

a)    I found this recent regulation on the Harvard Law website.
b)    I believe this creates an opportunity to create a way for power plants to decrease their carbon dioxide emissions.
c)     The prototypical customer would be power companies who utilize power plants.
d)    This is also a relatively difficult opportunity to take advantage of. This is because many power plants may already have this technology or be working to reduce emissions already.

I think most people do not consider this opportunity because it is a very complicated issue and most people do not even think of entering this market.

  1. You made a good point in opportunity #3 concerning the farmers reluctance to use new chemicals. My dad is in the horticulture field and sees this trend industry-wide because they get comfortable with what they know and aren't looking for change.

I also liked how your regulatory trends focused on issues concerning the Environmental Protection Agency which is a topic I am very interested in.

  2. I found your information to be very interesting, and gripping as trends. I found the Chinese market post and the EPA post to be the most interesting. I think that the EPA post is the most important topic you discussed because the extreme funding cuts have found the agency in awful condition. Its good to see that it is able to perform any function at all.

  3. Great job giving examples of opportunities in Gainesville. Your formatting made it easy to follow as a reader. Also, I found opportunity 2 to be very interesting, It would be cool if there was such a grocery store, but I agree that it would be a hard industry to enter with all of the current competition. Overall great job.
